Artist Statement:

Our lives have become a movie where we are all desperately clinging to the idea that we are the main actors, and everything revolves around the self. It is time to pause for clarity, to breathe, to process, to gasp.
We are looking at the world as if through film.
Milosz Paul Rosinski wrote in his study on Cinema of the Self: “I introduce the self as a modern and postmodern concept and argue that there is a loss of selfhood in contemporary culture… the viewer establishes a cinematic relation to the visual self that extends and transgresses the boundaries of inside and outside, presence and absence, and here and there…
By creating, we play with our understanding of basics. We de-construct, we theorise, and we create new. We manipulate to create advantage. To pause is to take a snapshot of this… an image of self.
Through sketching these found and created images I explore the way I perceive life around me and how I would like to portray the positive and interesting things that is still to be filmed in this life. My work becomes a form of Metafiction (Metafiction is a form of fiction that emphasizes its own constructedness in a way that continually reminds readers to be aware that they are reading or viewing a fictional work). The work thus becomes self-conscious about language, literary form, and storytelling, and works of metafiction directly or indirectly draw attention to their status as artifacts
When we hit the pause button on life and look at how image upon image upon image creates motion, this notion becomes clear. Life needs a balance between important and the not so important for us to create a full life. An interesting life.
These artworks and sketches of mine (An Encyclopaedia of life) become a way of stopping momentum or motion to show the complexity of things. A temporary stop in action or speech.
About the Artist

“The faster we move the less we see the details. We are missing the basics”.

Riaan hurls and pours old car oil, effectively slowing time and capturing it with a mix of charcoal and paint on different surfaces. The static images vibrate with movement.

Exploring and deepening his own impressions and comprehension, Riaan van Zyl searches for and takes inspiration from ordinary things around him. He deconstructs commonplace ideas, and he loves re-imagining it with experimental media - old oil, anthracite, cobalt salts. Riaan dissects movement and reconstructs their context and value with patient eyes and a hungry mind. He is diacritical.
While at first glance his work might seem abstract and confusing, Riaan focuses on challenging the viewer to see everyday things in a different light. Let your eyes slow down with his images, arresting the motion the same way a film played in slow motion would.

The outcome has its own, very personal structure, punctuating movement through composition.

Not unlike his work Riaan has taken time and tirelessly experimented to define his unique and expressive style. He is currently playing with the concept (entertaining the concept, working on the concept) of interactivity through expressive cooperation and its moving parts. He is testing a new way to traverse and step beyond the contemporary frontiers, options that are offered by unique media.

Riaan exhibits internationally and locally. His works feature in prestigious art collections around the world.

I look forward to seeing you at the exhibition opening on Sunday 15 November 2020 at 11:00 am (Shop 2003,
Crystal Court). The exhibition runs until Sunday 22 November 2020.

Please contact me if you require further information.

Best Regards

Riaan

0824604160

Sponsorship:
Mall of Africa
Le’Vante Garde
NGR
General Information for Mall of Africa:
Address: Magwa &, Lone Creek Cres, Waterval City, Midrand, 1686
Opening times: 11:00 am – 20:00 pm
Phone: 010 596 1470
Admission: Free of charge
